Referencing Tim Harrower’s The Edge, The Crow’s Nest student newspaper editors wanted to start a new weekly column to add some character to the Arts & Life section. The starting point was a logo.
The column title was “The Margin,” which for me had a clear reference to the doodles we draw in the margins while taking notes during class. So a notebook page was the starting point for my design.
First I set the type in illustrator, using the free font ChunkFive, offered free by the good folks at The League of Moveable Type which I used when I designed the original newspaper flag (the newspapers logo for you non-newsies). The “the” is set in Exo Light Italic, another excellent free font offered by Natanael Gama.
To give it a sketchy look I next hand-outlined the text and created a fill by hand with a sharpie.
I overlaid these together on top of a looseleaf scan to achieve the final logo.
